Browser hijacked by unisalees & BuyNSave - Solved

Problem: Hijacked Browser
I tried several different programs as well removing them manually - they kept coming back.

Here's what finally worked:

I booted up into Safe mode (with networking - so i could work online during scans)
And ran the following:
(Note: Due to the nature of  the problem, it is advisable to be extra careful that you are downloading, the desired program and not more malware disguised as useful tools.)
  • Rkill
  • MBAM  - Threat Scan
    • (In settings i chkd off: scan for rootkits & self protection module (in addition to default settings).
    • (In settings i cleared/removed any 'malware exclusions')
  • Super Anti-Spyware
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 2 - Ran both systemc scan & rootkit scan)
  • Zoek (Didn't even finish, stopped after 'Delete Services')
I also used windows explorer to search for the terms: 'BuyNSave' & 'unisalees'.
The search for 'unisalees' brought up one result - C:\Program Files (x86)\unisalees, which I was unable to delete, so i just deleted the file(s) inside.

I doubt all of these are necessary, but I'm not sure what finally did the trick.
So, if you've tried (some of) these methods, please leave a comment detailing what you did and what did/didn't work. Your comments may help others experiencing similar issues.

Problem:

No sound

Problem details:

When I attempted to test it, I got a message dialog box saying:
"The device is being used by another application. Please close any devices that are playing audio to this device and then try again."

Attempts:

Opened "speaker properties" window
(right-click speaker icon -> select "playback devices" -> select device -> select properties button)
Selected 'advanced' tab, and unchecked the boxes under exclusive mode. Did not help.

Solution:

Uninstalled and re-installed sound drivers:

  1. Opened "device manager": (Start button -> type "device manage" (without quotes))
  2. Uninstall sound drivers:  under "sound, video, and game controllers" - right click, select uninstall. Did not check-off/select "delete the driver software for this driver".
  3. Re-installed: While still in the device manager window, select 'action' (upper left corner of window), and then select 'scan for hardware changes'. If there is no problems with your hardware, windows should 'find' your speakers and begin installing device drivers automatically (takes a few minutes).   (To help prod it along, you can try troubleshooting hardware/speakers, but it should go automatically.)

Cause/prevention:

Unknown. Sounds like malware took over the speakers or something like that, but so far, MBAM (Malwarebytes) hasn't found anything... If anyone has any ideas, let me know.
